3-Day Desert Trek & Bivouac Camping from Zagora

Overview

For travelers looking for a far more authentic and physical desert experience than a conventional tourist camp, this 3-day trek between Zagora and M'Hamid offers something different: walking and riding camels across the dunes of Erg Chegaga, Morocco's largest and most remote sea of sand, and sleeping in simple bivouac camps, far from any infrastructure, guided by local Berbers who know the desert like their own home.

Unlike Erg Chebbi (Merzouga), which is far more visited and accessible, Erg Chegaga lies several hours by 4x4 track from M'Hamid, guaranteeing a greater sense of isolation, silence, and direct contact with the Saharan landscape. Its dunes reach up to 300 meters in height and stretch across more than 40 kilometers, forming one of the most spectacular and untouched sand landscapes in all of North Africa.

This is not a luxury camp tour: it is a trekking and bivouac experience, with nights spent under the stars in simple nomad-style tents, meals prepared in traditional Berber style, and days of walking combined with camel stretches to cover the distances between the dunes. Ideal for active travelers seeking real disconnection, moderate physical effort, and a deep immersion into the nomadic culture of the Moroccan Sahara.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Zagora - M'Hamid - Start of the Trek Toward Erg Chegaga

The adventure begins with pick-up in Zagora (or an agreed meeting point) in the morning. You will travel by 4x4 through the spectacular Draa Valley, the longest valley in Morocco, dotted with date palm oases, adobe villages, and old kasbahs that once protected the caravan trade routes.

On arrival in M'Hamid El Ghizlane, the last major settlement before the great desert, you will load your gear onto the camels and begin trekking on foot into the dunes. The pace is relaxed and adapted to the group, alternating stretches of walking with breaks to hydrate and take in the changing landscape: first stony terrain (hamada), then the first stretches of fine sand dunes.

At sunset you will reach the first bivouac camp, where the Berber team will prepare a traditional meal cooked over hot coals. Overnight under the stars in simple nomad-style tents.

Distance covered on foot/camel: Approximately 12 km
Trekking time: Approximately 4 hours
Meals: Lunch and Dinner

Day 2: Full Day Trekking Through Erg Chegaga

An early desert sunrise, with the option to climb one of the dunes near camp to watch the sun rise over the sea of sand of Erg Chegaga. After breakfast, the fullest day of trekking begins, heading into the heart of the tallest dunes, some reaching up to 300 meters.

Throughout the day you will alternate walking on foot with stretches by camel, crossing valleys between dunes and exploring the vastness of this remote erg. The Berber guide will share knowledge of traditional desert navigation, the plants and animals adapted to this extreme environment, and the historic trans-Saharan caravan routes that for centuries crossed this region transporting salt, gold, and other goods.

At nightfall, you will reach a second bivouac point deeper in the desert, where you will enjoy another traditional dinner and, if the group wishes, Berber music around the fire under an exceptionally clear starry sky, far from any source of light pollution.

Distance covered on foot/camel: Approximately 15-18 km
Trekking time: Approximately 6 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Day 3: Erg Chegaga - Return to M'Hamid and Zagora

One last desert sunrise before breakfast and the start of the trek back to the meeting point with the 4x4 vehicle, usually at an accessible area near Erg Chegaga. During the return walk you will have time to reflect on the experience and enjoy the desert scenery one final time before rejoining civilization.

The 4x4 vehicle will pick you up for the drive back to M'Hamid and then Zagora, where the trek concludes. Final transfer to your agreed destination (Zagora, Ouarzazate, or Marrakech, depending on prior arrangements).

Distance covered on foot/camel: Approximately 8 km
Trekking time: Approximately 3 hours
Meals: Breakfast

Frequently Asked Questions

What fitness level is required for this trek?

A moderate fitness level. No previous trekking experience is required, but reasonable physical condition is recommended, since you will walk several hours a day on sand, which demands more effort than walking on firm ground. Longer stretches can be covered by camel if needed.

What is the difference between a bivouac and a luxury camp?

A bivouac is a much simpler and more authentic experience: basic nomad-style tents, with no electricity or private bathrooms, set up directly on the sand in remote locations. A luxury camp, on the other hand, offers comfortable beds, a private bathroom, and more amenities, but is always set at a fixed location accessible by vehicle.

Are there bathrooms during the trek?

Private areas are set up near the bivouac for basic needs. There are no conventional sanitary facilities, as this is a genuine camping experience in the middle of the desert.

Is it safe to sleep in the desert without infrastructure?

Yes. Our team of Berber guides knows the area thoroughly and has extensive experience managing groups in the desert. All necessary precautions are taken regarding water, navigation, and overall safety.

Can this trek be done as a family, or is there a recommended minimum age?

It is recommended for travelers aged 12 and up due to the physical demands of the walking and the simple camping conditions. For families with younger children, we recommend contacting us to discuss shorter alternatives or itineraries with more camel support.

What is the best time of year for this trek?

October to April are the most recommended months, as daytime temperatures are more bearable for the physical effort of trekking. In summer, daytime temperatures can exceed 45°C.

What should I bring for this trek?

Comfortable trekking shoes that have already been broken in, breathable technical clothing, a good sleeping bag (or request one as an extra), a hat and sun protection, a headlamp, and a warm jacket for the nights, since temperatures drop considerably in the desert.

Important Notes

  • This is a physical, adventure-style trek, different from conventional 4x4 desert tours. Not recommended for those seeking a luxury or low-effort experience.
  • The itinerary can be adapted in distance and pace depending on the group's fitness level.
  • The exact routes and bivouac locations may vary depending on weather conditions and water availability in the area.
  • We recommend mentioning any medical or dietary needs in advance.
