This route takes the country's two most photographed colors โ the ochre-red of Marrakech and the deep blue of Chefchaouen โ and connects them with a proper crossing of the Sahara in between. Over five days you'll go from the pink ramparts of Marrakech, through the High Atlas, into the dunes of Erg Chebbi, on to the labyrinth of Fez's medina, and finally up into the Rif Mountains to finish among Chefchaouen's blue-washed lanes.
It's a trip built around contrast: mountain passes followed by desert silence, the dense energy of Fez's souks followed by the calm of a hillside town where every building seems to have been dipped in indigo. A night in the dunes brings camel riding, sandboarding, and Berber music around the fire under an exceptionally clear sky, while the medina of Fez adds centuries of history to the mix before the trip winds down in Chefchaouen's relaxed atmosphere.
Like every route we run, this one is fully adaptable โ it's commonly finished in Tangier, but can just as easily end in Fez, Casablanca, or loop back to Marrakech, depending on your onward plans.
The trip begins with pickup at Marrakech airport or your hotel or riad in the city, where your guide meets you for the start of the journey. We head south, climbing into the High Atlas with regular stops for the panoramic views along the way.
Midway through the drive, we stop in Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified village protected by UNESCO and known for appearing in films such as The Mummy and Prince of Persia. There's time to walk its narrow passageways and take in the details of its adobe architecture before continuing.
After lunch, the route passes through Ouarzazate โ known locally as the gateway to the desert and, thanks to its film industry, the "Hollywood of Africa" โ with an optional stop at the Atlas Studios to see sets from decades of productions. From there we continue into the Dades Valley, passing the curious rock towers known as the "monkey fingers" before arriving at a hotel for the night.
Driving distance: Approximately 353 km Driving time: Approximately 6 hours 30 minutes Meals: Dinner
After breakfast, the road follows the Todra River through palm groves and small Berber villages toward the Todra Gorge in Tinghir, one of the most striking canyons in Morocco, with cliffs rising almost vertically on either side of the road. From there, the route continues toward Merzouga.
On the way to the Erg Chebbi dunes, your driver may suggest a stop at a Berber-run shop, where you're welcome to try on traditional clothing and take photos at no charge โ buying anything is entirely optional, and skipping the stop is just as easy if it doesn't interest you.
Arriving in Merzouga, camels are waiting to carry you into the dunes for sunset, followed by a chance to try sandboarding on the slopes nearby. The night is spent at a luxury desert camp, with dinner and Berber music under an exceptionally starry sky.
Driving distance: Approximately 310 km Driving time: Approximately 5 hours Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Watching the sunrise over the dunes is a strong reason to get up early. After breakfast, you can choose to head back by camel or by 4x4 before the drive to Fez begins.
Along the way, we stop at several notable spots โ the palm-lined Ziz Valley, a cedar forest near Azrou where Barbary macaques occasionally appear, and the town of Ifrane, whose Alpine-style architecture has earned it the nickname "Switzerland of Morocco."
We reach Fez in the late afternoon, checking into a hotel or riad within the historic medina for the night.
Driving distance: Approximately 500 km Driving time: Approximately 7 hours 30 minutes Meals: Breakfast
After breakfast at your riad, a local guide and driver meet you to explore Fez in depth. The medina here is the largest car-free urban area in the world, and a guide makes all the difference in navigating its layered history โ tanneries, madrasas, fondouks, and markets that have operated in roughly the same spots for centuries. There's time for lunch in the medina before the afternoon drive to Chefchaouen, Morocco's blue pearl, where a charming riad in the heart of the old town offers a quiet place to unwind after a full day.
Driving distance: Approximately 197 km Driving time: Approximately 3 hours 38 minutes Meals: Breakfast
The morning is free to explore Chefchaouen at your own pace โ wandering its blue-washed alleys, browsing its markets, taking photos, or simply relaxing at a cafรฉ with a mountain view.
In the afternoon, we head to Tangier, where the standard version of this tour ends with a drop-off at the airport, port, or your hotel. If it suits your plans better, the trip can just as easily finish in Fez, Casablanca, or loop back to Marrakech instead.
Driving distance: Approximately 112 km Driving time: Approximately 2 hours 12 minutes Meals: Breakfast
