If your time in Morocco is limited but the Sahara is non-negotiable, this is the tour built for you. In just two days, round-trip from Marrakech, you'll cross the High Atlas Mountains, ride a camel into the dunes of Erg Chebbi, watch the desert change color at sunset, and sleep in a private tent under a genuinely dark sky — then do it all again in reverse, arriving back in the city by the following evening.
It's an intense pace by any measure, with long hours of driving on both days, but it packs in every essential element of the desert experience: the mountain crossing, the camel trek, the campfire evening with Berber music, and a night far enough from any city glow to see the Milky Way properly. For travelers whose schedule simply won't allow for a longer loop, it's the most direct way to bring the Sahara within reach.
An early pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech gets the trip underway. The road climbs almost immediately into the High Atlas, with several stops along the way to take in the scenery and photograph the switchback views.
After a lunch stop en route, the drive continues toward Merzouga, passing close to the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, where we make a brief exterior stop for photos and a closer look at the fortified village from outside.
By late afternoon, camels are ready to carry you into the Erg Chebbi dunes. Partway across, we stop on a high ridge to watch the sun set over the Sahara before continuing on to the desert camp, where your private tent is waiting. Dinner is followed by an evening of Berber drumming and song around the campfire.
Driving distance: Approximately 560 km Driving time: Approximately 9 hours Meals: Dinner
A sunrise over the dunes is well worth the early start. After breakfast, a 4x4 takes you back to the village of Merzouga to begin the return journey to Marrakech, with stops along the way including a break for lunch.
One of the most memorable stops on the way back is the viewpoint over the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, and a location that has appeared in films and series including Kingdom of Heaven, Prince of Persia, and Game of Thrones.
You'll arrive back in Marrakech by early evening, where we drop you at your riad or hotel to close out the trip.
