Landing in Tangier puts you on the doorstep of a completely different Morocco to the one most travelers picture โ a port city looking out over the Strait of Gibraltar, close enough to Europe to see the Spanish coast on a clear day, yet fully Moroccan in character. This five-day route uses that starting point to trace a diagonal line across the country: north to south, mountains to medina to Sahara, finishing in the pink walls of Marrakech.
In just five days you'll wander the cobalt-blue lanes of Chefchaouen, get lost (on purpose) in the maze of Fez's medina, cross the cedar-forested Middle Atlas where Barbary macaques still roam wild, and spend a night camped among the dunes of Erg Chebbi. It's a tightly packed but genuinely varied introduction to the country, moving from Rif mountain air to desert silence in under a week.
This same route can also start from Casablanca โ ask us about the 5-day Morocco itinerary if that suits your flights better. And as with everything we run, the plan below is a starting point rather than a fixed script: tell us what matters most to you and we'll adjust the pacing.
We meet you at Tangier's airport, port, or hotel and set off for the Rif Mountains. The drive climbs steadily through pine-covered hills before dropping into Chefchaouen, where entire buildings, staircases, and doorways are washed in every shade of blue. The rest of the afternoon is yours to wander its quiet lanes, browse the woven wool blankets and goat cheese in its shops, and settle in for the night at a riad in the old town.
Driving distance: Approximately 115 km Driving time: Approximately 2 hours Meals: None
After breakfast we head south toward Fez, Morocco's spiritual and intellectual capital for over a thousand years. Once inside the medina walls, a local guide leads you through a genuine maze of alleyways โ tanneries, metalworkers, spice stalls, and centuries-old madrasas โ impossible to navigate without help and endlessly rewarding with one. Lunch in the medina is optional. Overnight in a riad.
Driving distance: Approximately 200 km Driving time: Approximately 3 hours 30 minutes Meals: Breakfast
The road climbs into the Middle Atlas through Ifrane, a town of steep-roofed stone chalets that looks more Alpine than African, then continues through cedar forests where troops of Barbary macaques often appear roadside. After lunch, the landscape opens into the palm-lined Ziz Valley on the descent toward the Sahara.
Arriving in Merzouga in the late afternoon, camels are waiting to carry you into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset. Dinner and Berber music follow at a desert camp under the stars.
Driving distance: Approximately 460 km Driving time: Approximately 7 hours Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Sunrise over the dunes is worth the early wake-up call. After breakfast we head to Rissani, a former royal capital with a working traditional market, before continuing to Tinghir and the Todra Gorge, where sheer 300-meter cliffs frame a short but dramatic riverside walk. The day ends at a hotel in the Dades Valley.
Driving distance: Approximately 300 km Driving time: Approximately 5 hours Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
The final day starts with a visit to Ouarzazate, home to the Atlas Studios film sets, followed by the fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou, protected by UNESCO and familiar from more than one Hollywood epic. After lunch, the route climbs over the High Atlas for one last mountain crossing before descending into Marrakech, where we transfer you to your hotel or riad to close out the trip.
Driving distance: Approximately 360 km Driving time: Approximately 6 hours Meals: Breakfast
