If you are looking for a more relaxed and immersive Saharan adventure, this private 4-day desert tour from Marrakech to Erg Chegaga is the ideal choice. By adding an extra day compared to the express tour, we break up the driving hours, allowing you to enjoy each stop at a leisurely pace and sleep in two different desert environments.
You will cross the High Atlas Mountains, visit the historic Kasbah of Telouet and the famous Ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, drive past the extensive palm groves of the Draa Valley, and spend your first desert night in the dunes of Erg Lihoudi before traveling off-road in a 4x4 into the heart of the giant sand sea of Erg Chegaga, Morocco's wildest desert.
We depart in the morning from your accommodation in Marrakech in a comfortable, private air-conditioned vehicle. Climbing into the High Atlas Mountains, we wind through the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m), enjoying panoramic views of deep valleys and traditional mud-brick Berber villages.
Our first stop is the crumbling yet majestic Kasbah of Telouet, the former residence of the Pacha Glaoui. After the visit, we drive through the scenic Ounila Valley to reach the Ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a famous filming location for movies like Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia.
After lunch, we continue to Ouarzazate, known as the Hollywood of Morocco. You can opt to visit the Atlas Film Studios or photograph the exterior of the historic Kasbah of Taourirt. Dinner and overnight stay in a charming hotel or riad in Ouarzazate.
Driving distance: Approximately 200 km
Driving time: Approximately 4 hours 30 minutes
Meals: Dinner
After breakfast, we head south across the Tizi n'Tinififft pass to reach Agdz, the gateway to the beautiful Draa Valley. We drive alongside this massive palm oasis that stretches to the edge of the Sahara, stopping to admire the old clay-brick kasbahs and oasis views.
Our journey continues through Zagora to the village of Tamegroute. Here, we visit the historic Quranic library, which houses medieval manuscripts, and see the traditional kilns producing the area's distinct green-glazed pottery.
We arrive in M'hamid, where the paved road ends. From here, we travel a short distance off-road to the dunes of Erg Lihoudi. You will enjoy a sunset camel ride over the dunes and spend the night in a cozy, traditional-style desert camp.
Driving distance: Approximately 260 km
Driving time: Approximately 5 hours
Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Today is a day of pure adventure. After breakfast at Erg Lihoudi, we board a 4x4 vehicle. The entire day is spent off-road, navigating the diverse terrains of the Sahara: flat gravel plains (hamada), dry riverbeds, and small sand hills.
In the middle of the day, we stop at the Sacred Oasis, a natural water spring emerging in the middle of the desert plain, where we'll have lunch under the shade of the palms.
We continue our off-road journey to reach the breathtaking dunes of Erg Chegaga, the largest and most remote dune field in the region. Here, the golden sand dunes rise up to 300 meters high. You'll have the afternoon free to try sandboarding or walk the dunes. We climb a high ridge to watch a spectacular Sahara sunset. Dinner and overnight stay in a luxury camp surrounded by silence.
Driving distance: Approximately 70 km of off-road 4x4 tracks
Driving time: Approximately 3 hours in the 4x4
Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Waking up early is highly recommended to watch the sunrise cast golden shadows over the sand dunes. After breakfast at the camp, we depart the dunes in the 4x4, heading west.
We cross the wide, flat expanse of Lake Iriki, a dry salt lake that is now a hard-packed mud flat surrounded by tabular mountains, famous for its prehistoric fossils. We follow the tracks of the historic Paris-Dakar rally to reach Foum Zguid, where the asphalt road begins.
We drive to Taznakht, a town famous throughout Morocco for its hand-woven Berber rugs. We will stop for lunch and visit a local cooperative. In the afternoon, we drive back over the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, arriving in Marrakech by early evening. We will drop you off at your riad or hotel.
Driving distance: Approximately 400 km
Driving time: Approximately 8 hours
Meals: Breakfast
The 4-day tour is much more balanced and less tiring. The driving distance on the first day is shortened by staying overnight in Ouarzazate. Spending two nights in different parts of the desert (Erg Lihoudi and Erg Chegaga) allows you to fully unplug and absorb the desert atmosphere at a relaxed pace.
Erg Lihoudi is a smaller, more accessible dune field near M'hamid, where we stay in a traditional-style camp. Erg Chegaga is the deep desert, a massive field of high dunes where you stay in a luxury camp surrounded by total wilderness and silence.
No. The highway sections of the trip are driven in a comfortable private sedan, minivan, or SUV. The off-road sections (from M'hamid to Erg Lihoudi, and the off-road crossing to Erg Chegaga and Foum Zguid) are driven entirely in a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle.
