Five days is not a lot of time, but it is enough to fall for Marrakech and still make it all the way to the dunes of the Sahara and back. This loop tour keeps Marrakech as your anchor: you land there, you sleep there on both ends of the trip, and in between you cross an entire mountain range to reach one of the most photographed deserts on earth.
The route climbs over the High Atlas through Berber villages stacked on hillsides, drops into the valleys south of the mountains, and finishes with a night among the dunes of Merzouga before looping back. It is a compact way to see two completely different Moroccos — the ochre alleys of a Red City and the pale gold of Erg Chebbi — without needing two separate trips.
As with every route we run, this one bends to fit you. If you would rather spend an extra half-day in a kasbah, swap a hotel, or add a cooking class, just say so before or during the trip and we will adjust.
You will be met at Marrakech Menara Airport by your driver, who takes you straight to your riad in the medina. There is no itinerary today beyond settling in — check in, shake off the flight, and get your first look at the city on your own terms.
Once you are ready, Jemaa el-Fna Square is only a short walk from most riads and worth an early visit. As the afternoon turns to evening the square fills with orange juice carts, storytellers, and the smoke of grilled food stalls — a fitting introduction to Marrakech before you head south into the mountains tomorrow.
Your driver picks you up at the riad and the city gives way quickly to farmland, then to the switchbacks of the High Atlas. The Tizi n'Tichka pass tops out well over 2,000 meters, and the villages clinging to the slopes below — flat-roofed, built from the same red earth as the mountains — make for some of the best photo stops of the whole trip.
Lunch is timed for Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified ksar of stacked mud-brick towers that has stood in for ancient Rome, Egypt, and Persia on screen — you may recognize it from Gladiator or Game of Thrones. From there it is a short hop to Ouarzazate, Morocco's film capital, where a stop at the studios is optional but popular.
The afternoon carries you through the Valley of the Roses, fragrant with damask roses each spring, before climbing into the Dades Gorges. The valley floor here is scattered with strange, rounded rock formations locals call the monkey fingers — an odd, memorable sight right before you check into your hotel for the night.
Total driving distance: Approximately 353 km Total driving time: Approximately 6 hours and 30 minutes Meals: Dinner
Breakfast comes with a view over the Dades Valley's palm groves before you set off along the river toward Tinghir. The road threads between orchards and old Berber villages before delivering you to the Todra Gorge, where limestone walls rise nearly 300 meters straight up on either side of a narrow river — one of the most dramatic canyons in the country.
Continuing east, you will likely pass a roadside Berber shop where you can try on traditional dress or browse scarves and jewelry at no obligation — a common, low-key stop, and one you can skip if you would rather push on.
By late afternoon the road runs out of asphalt and the dunes of Merzouga rise ahead. Camels are waiting to carry you into Erg Chebbi as the light turns gold, and after sandboarding down a dune face and watching the sunset, you arrive at your camp for a hot dinner under an enormous, unpolluted sky.
Total driving distance: Approximately 310 km Total driving time: Approximately 5 hours Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Breakfast at the camp is followed by the long drive back toward Marrakech, this time via the Draa Valley — Morocco's longest river valley, lined for hundreds of kilometers with date palms. A stop in Agdez gives you a last wide view over the palmery before the road climbs back into the mountains.
Lunch is in Ouarzazate, then it is back over the High Atlas by a different stretch of road than the one you came in on, arriving in Marrakech in the evening. Your driver drops you at your riad, where a hot shower and a soft bed will feel very well earned.
Total driving distance: Approximately 560 km Total driving time: Approximately 9 hours Meals: Breakfast
Your last day belongs to the city. After breakfast, a local guide walks you through the highlights — Jemaa el-Fna by daylight, the intricate stucco of Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, Ben Youssef Madrasa, and the towering Koutoubia Mosque, each with its own centuries of history.
In the afternoon, head to the newer Gueliz district and the Majorelle Garden, a cobalt-blue oasis of bamboo and cacti that feels a world away from the medina's density. If your flight leaves today, we will time your airport transfer around your schedule so this last taste of Marrakech does not feel rushed.
Yes. You start and finish in the same riad in Marrakech, which makes it a convenient option if your flights land and depart from the same airport.
Both. Day 1 is free time and Day 5 is a full guided city tour, so you get a genuine feel for Marrakech on top of the desert crossing.
Yes, within reason. Pace, hotel category, and some stops can be changed to suit your travel style — just tell us what matters most to you.
Yes, both are part of the standard package with no extra charge.
A riad in Marrakech on nights 1 and 5, a hotel in the Dades Valley on night 2, and a private tent at a luxury desert camp on night 3.
It is a solid option if your time is limited — you get city culture, mountain scenery, and a genuine desert night in one trip.
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) bring the most comfortable temperatures for both the mountains and the desert.
Light layers for daytime, a warm jacket for desert nights, sturdy walking shoes, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
