Sunset Camel Ride in the Palm Grove

Fifteen minutes outside the walls of Marrakech, more than 100,000 date palms stretch across an oasis that legend says was seeded by 11th-century Almoravid soldiers spitting out date pits as they camped. Today the Palmeraie is the calmest corner of the city — a maze of quiet sandy tracks where a camel ride at sunset turns into one of the most photographed and best-loved experiences travellers take home from Marrakech.

The experience

A driver collects you from your riad or hotel and brings you to the edge of the palm grove, about 15–20 minutes from the centre. Your guide introduces you to your camel and walks you through the basics — how to mount, how the animal moves, and what to expect when it stands (a two-stage motion, back legs first, that catches almost everyone off guard the first time and usually gets a laugh out of the group). A turban or Berber-style scarf is on offer for photos, a small detail that ends up in most people's favourite shots of the day.

From there the ride follows quiet trails deep in the palm grove, well away from any road, with your guide walking alongside the whole way. The pace is unhurried, giving you time to take in rows of palms lit from behind by the falling sun, a traditional well, and — on a clear day — the distant silhouette of the Atlas Mountains. The ride wraps up with mint tea poured the traditional way, a fitting close to an evening built around light, movement, and quiet.

  • Optional traditional dress for photos

  • Mint tea served at the end in a local setting
  • A working look at the oasis's ancient khettara irrigation system, still in use after more than a thousand years

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to ride a camel?

Yes. The camels are used to human contact and stay under the guide's control the entire time. The only surprise tends to be the stand-up motion, which is sudden but not dangerous.

How long is the ride itself?

The camel portion lasts 45–60 minutes; including pick-up, preparation, and tea, the full outing runs about two hours.

Can I do this in the Sahara instead?

This particular ride is set in Marrakech's Palmeraie. If you're travelling on to Merzouga, camel rides through the dunes of Erg Chebbi are also available and offer a very different, more immersive desert experience.

Is a private departure possible?

Yes — private rides let you adjust the pace, stops, and timing, and are especially popular with couples and families with young children.

When's the best time of year for this?

Any season works, but spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most comfortable temperatures and the richest sunset colours.
